What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is a situation requiring prompt attention from a dental professional to alleviate pain, to save a tooth, or to stop bleeding. Following are some of the most common types of dental emergencies:

  • A cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • A knocked out tooth
  • A dislodged or partially knocked out (extruded) tooth
  • Severe, lasting toothache
  • Swelling due to an infection or an abscess
  • An injury to soft tissue including the gums, tongue, cheeks, and lips.
  • Losing a dental restoration including a crown or filling.

If you encounter any of these emergency situations, please contact us immediately. We will provide you with instructions on how to handle your emergency until you make it to our office.

Tips for Dental Emergencies

If a blow knocks out your tooth, try to return it to its socket without forcing it, making sure not to touch the roots. If you can’t get it back in, place it between your cheeks and gums or in some milk. Your tooth has the best chance of being saved if treated within an hour or two of being knocked out.

If your tooth is partially dislodged, apply light pressure to return it to its place. Bite down to keep your tooth from moving.

A severe toothache, a swollen face, an infection, or an abscess will require urgent care. While on the way to see us, use cold compresses to keep the swelling down. Never place aspirin or any painkiller against your aching tooth. If you notice a pimple-like swelling on your gum, do not attempt to pop it.

Injuries to the soft tissues in your mouth can cause significant bleeding. Apply pressure using gauze and use cold compresses to stop the bleeding and alleviate the pain.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While you can't eliminate all the risks for dental emergencies, a few precautions will leave you better protected. Using a sports mouthguard during sports activities can help prevent traumatic injury. Visiting our office every six months offers protection through prevention. You will help keep your teeth healthy and will allow us to identify and treat any problem in the early stages before progressing and becoming a dental emergency.
