What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a custom-made precision restoration that we cement over a damaged tooth or a dental implant to completely cover it. We, at Natural Smiles Family Dentistry, are pleased to offer our patients quality, metal-free dental crowns. Our restorations are made to match the color of your natural teeth, blending seamlessly with the surrounding ones. Our porcelain crowns are incredibly durable, with the potential of lasting a lifetime with proper care. Your new restoration will look, feel and function just like a natural tooth!
Why Would You Need a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns offer multiple uses and benefits. They look completely natural, restoring the look, feel and function of a natural tooth. Dental crowns are most commonly used to correct or repair the following conditions:
- Functional chewing problems
- Badly damaged or weakened teeth
- Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy
- Issues with the appearance of natural teeth such as spacing, irregular shape, or discoloration
- Cracked or broken, or severely worn down teeth
- Teeth with large fillings and not much tooth structure remaining
- To cover a dental implant
- To hold a dental bridge in place
What Is the Procedure?
Dental crowns typically require two visits to our office. During your first appointment, we will examine and prepare your tooth. We will take x-rays of the tooth and bone around it. If we find decay or if there is a risk of infection or injury to your tooth’s pulp, you may first need a root canal treatment.
To make room for the crown, we will reshape your tooth by filing down the top and sides. We will then use a type of putty to make an impression of the area a dental laboratory will use to construct your crown. It usually takes about a week or two for us to receive your restoration. While you are waiting, we will fit you with a temporary dental crown to cover and protect your prepared tooth.
At a separate appointment, we will remove your temporary crown and place your permanent one. We will check for proper fit before we cement it in place. You will love the natural look and feel of your new restoration!
