Root Canal Therapy
Does your heart skip a beat or two at the thought of a root canal treatment? According to the American Association of Endodontists, root canal therapy is the most feared dental procedure of all. Despite what you may have heard, this treatment does not cause excruciating pain but instead, works to relieve you of existing pain! At Natural Smiles Family Dentistry, we have options to help reduce anxiety and to ensure your comfort. We are all about making your experience a positive, stress-free one!
Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?
A root canal is a natural cavity at the center of a tooth containing the tooth pulp. If the area becomes irritated or infected due to trauma or tooth decay, root canal therapy may be your only option to save the tooth. If left untreated, an infected tooth can cause complications including swelling of the face and neck, an abscess, bone loss around the tooth root, and severe tooth pain.
Indications you may need root canal treatment include sensitivity to hot and cold, discolored teeth, swollen and tender gums, or recurring pimples forming on your gums. If you observe any of these symptoms, contact us to save your tooth and avoid any complications.
What Is the Root Canal Therapy Procedure?
We will start your dental procedure by taking x-rays to determine the condition of your tooth. We will administer a local anesthetic along with sedation as needed for your comfort. Our endodontist, the root canal specialist, will remove the tooth decay and the inflamed tooth pulp. We will clean and disinfect the area before sealing the roots.
You will need a dental crown to strengthen and protect your treated tooth. During the following appointment, we will prepare your tooth by filing the top and sides down to make room for your crown. We will make impressions and send them to a dental laboratory to construct your restoration and will fit you with a temporary one.
During a subsequent appointment, we will remove your temporary crown and place the permanent one on your tooth to protect it and to restore the way it looks, feels, and functions. With proper oral care, your restoration can last a lifetime!
